Instinct Matters

-Troubles with the Wild Side of the Soul / How Animals Cope Better Than Humans-

----

The meeting had gone surprisingly well, but boring. Like any World Conference to him, really - He was left being static in one place, hands clutching him and not letting him escape. It was a torture of sorts, staring at everyone with empty eyes. They weren’t interesting at all and the pictures on the giant screen had turned into something completely dull even though they charmed him at first with their strong, pretty colors.

So he struggled. He whined and struggled to be freed, receiving a pet and some whispered words. He looked up and saw that blonde, random guy that liked he liked but never remembered his name. Uninterested, he looked away, and kept struggling.

For some minutes, the delicious caresses behind his ear where enough of a distraction to keep him in place. But after some time he was bored again, and whined louder. The blonde man looked down at him, nervous, whispering that he shouldn’t be that loud because they could bother others, which was completely untrue - Everyone was either equally bored and concentrated on spinning pencils, doodling or their cell phones, or proposing ideas and very into the meeting, enough to avoid noticing things around them.

After another whine, he was finally freed, to the floor.

“Don’t go look for trouble.” The blonde man warned him, and he simply turned away, looking under the table - The amount of shoes and boots made him a bit dizzy and disoriented, though he managed to see some in particular - Ones that swung and couldn’t stay still, others that moved and tried to caress only to get kicked back, and others that played a silly game of kicking a paper ball from one side of the table to the other in front of them. Though the most particular one was, surprisingly, accompanied by another small pet.

A panda bear.

He stared, dumbfounded, at the black-and-white beauty sitting comfortably between legs with gray pants and Chinese-styled black shoes. The bear was barely moving, still and its head resting against the leg that firmly held it, maybe asleep.

Still staring, he found himself walking forwards towards it. Only then he caught its scent - It was a female. Once he was close enough, the panda bear seemed to look at him for she turned, eyes barely visibly with the black spots around them. Barely acknowledging his presence, she got on her legs, shook lightly, and left her comfortable spot, disappearing behind the long tablecloth.

Leaving Kumajiro still staring, and amazingly, in love.

[El romance de la OTP continúa. (?)]

The hallways of the building used for hosting the Conference were huge. Huge and cold, the panda noted. Since it was a one-day Conference, something rare where not even all countries could assist in order to help for a recent crisis in Ukraine, the place used was a large house, and not an hotel as it was used to. Countries didn’t stay and had to take their flights home, or book their own reservations somewhere else in Moscow.

The Russian country had the worst, according to her owner, weather of all. It wasn’t only cold, but it was heavy - Like the cold could defeat you and take you down to cuddle and shiver in the floor while trying to keep your body warmth. The panda bear surely would’ve loved to do that, but she had to find the room first. Smartly choosing a door, with one paw she pushed it open and entered a much warmer place, with the fireplace lit up and the square little bed her owner carried for her when he left their country together.

She didn’t noticed, though, the other bear following her.

A small whine was all that alerted her. Turning, the panda stared at the polar bear, Kumajiro gathering all his personality to walk towards her.

The polar bear walked closer to her, and nuzzling was the first movement - Such a soft and adorable fur the other had! She was beautiful, and so cute, so delicate. He tried moving one paw on top of her, as if to hug -or dominate- her, make her feel safe, but the little almost invisible eyes sparkled with something different from cuteness.

With sharp claws, a push was all needed to bring the polar bear away and to the floor, whining with the sudden pain. Kumajiro stared at the fiery teeth showing at him, as a warning, the face easily changing back to the submissive, adorable cutie he had seen, the panda moving its head while letting out a small ‘hmpf’, turning her back on him to then settle comfortably on her bed.

Kumajiro was left between speechless, scared, and strangely attracted.

The panda bear proved to be a hard task. More than just a cute face, it was a spoiled face. He tried stealing the flowers from a vase at the hallway, after much effort, bringing them to place them in front of her bed. She stared, and moved her head again, rejecting his gift.

The second try consisted of stolen cookies. She pushed them away with one paw, angered this time, moving to the back of her bed to take out a bamboo stick with leaves she started to chew on.

Well, not his fault. Who knew the lady was on a diet?

Third try. A bow he stole -read, ripped- from a curtain decoration on a nearby room. Rejected again, he noticed that the silk on her bed was probably a million times more expensive than the bow.

Some jewelry decoration he found? Nothing interesting for her. A pencil he grabbed from the table when Kiku was distracted making origami with some sheets? She didn’t seem to like the Japanese letters on it. He returned it, and found the man this time concentrated, probably because the country speaking now was the People’s Republic of China - and what he did recently affected all. A light bulb lit up on his head, and Kumajiro moved silently towards the empty spot where the Chinese man had been sitting. He peeked around, and found a bag on his seat. Seeing that the person on the surrounding seats were paying attention -the region of Hong Kong too faked, and Yong Soo too excited- he nuzzled his way into the purse, and found what he wanted.

A squeaky toy.

Careful not to make a sound, he grabbed it softly and made his way quickly back to the hallway. He came through the door to the fireplace room nearly sprinting, the panda bear lifting her head to see what the fuss was all about, and her eyes were finally visible when once they turned bright at the sight of the toy.

Nonetheless, Kumajiro had to bring it over to her, and leave it on her bed. Still spoiled even when excited, it seemed.

The following minutes were of tension and squeaking noises. The panda bear wouldn’t stop playing, turning around, rolling on her bed, pushing the toy even out of it and Kumajiro giving it back like a true gentleman. She didn’t seem to notice it and kept playing, though, after some time where the polar bear had lost its hopes, she seemed to get bored of the toy and left it on the side, instead looking at him.

Trembling, Kumajiro stared back.

He wasn’t even sure if the panda was looking at him, those stupid eyes!

With relief, he saw the panda moving and making room in her bed.

More than surely, he jumped in and proceeded to cuddle into a comfortable nap, the cold of the Russian country barely noticeable between them.

[Entran los humanos. COMO ADVERTENCIAS? Ehm, hints RussiaxCanadá, hints RussiaxChina, hints CanadaxChina. ...Puras hints de todos con todos, qué va. (?)]

“Kumajiro…?”

Everyone had left the room, already, or was chatting by the heater on one side of the room. He looked under the table, and around it, but found no clue of the bear.

“Kumajiro… Where are you…? O-Oof!” While walking and looking under the table, he met with something hard in front of him. He looked up and saw Ivan turning around, a curious look on his face.

“Huh? What was…?”

“O-Oh, I’m sorry!” Matthew quickly apologized, lifting his hands up in defense. The Russian man looked at him, confused at first, but then a way-too-wide smile came to his face as realization hit him.

“Ah! Matvey, da?”

“Yes, eh… I-I’m sorry for that, I was looking for my bear.”

“The polar bear you never leave home?”

“Exactly him.” With a bit of a frown, feeling slightly annoyed by Ivan’s words, the blonde crouched again to look under the table, in case the bear had come back. “Where did he go…”

“Maybe the living room. It’s warmer there.” Ivan suggested, and Matthew looked up and saw a different smile on his face. “You’re a bit dependant on that thing, Matvey.”

“It’s an animal, not a thing…” He whispered, frown still there. He tried to make his way past the Russian, but was blocked by an arm.

“Didn’t mean it in a bad way, really, but he doesn’t treat you well enough to deserve that much attention.”

Pouting, now, Matthew put two and two together and, knowing the man, he smiled tiredly at his antics. Even after having chatted quite enough, especially for winter sports, he couldn’t always recognize when he was being offensive or what his true intentions were. This time, they were only good, even caring for him.

“I’ll keep it in mind.” He said, then, the smile calming the taller man and making him lower his arm, letting him make his way to the hallway.

At the room pointed by the man, which was indeed warmer, Matthew wasn’t really sure of what he saw. The curtains were opened wide and the sunset’s light entered the room, the orange light mixing with the one coming from the fire.

And to top it all, comfortably settled on the sofa, Kumajiro and a panda bear watched the scenery through the window, together.

Just in case, the Canadian exited the room and entered it again. He checked his glasses, then rubbed his eyes, but nope. They were still there. With the panda’s head against Kumajiro’s shoulder, even.

It was the most bizarre romantic photograph he had ever seen.

Even worse than the ones he saw from France.

“Kumajiro?” He called, and the bear turned, giving his usual confused look to then turn back towards the window. Used to it, but patience still running out -it went along with his sanity-, Matthew tried again. “Kumajiro, we have to leave.”

“No.”

It surprised him the how blunt his pet was. He was his owner! He should obey what he said with no doubts. And hanging out with a panda bear wouldn’t mean he couldn’t take action, which meant grabbing him and carrying him out while scolding him and telling him he’s a bad bear and promising pancakes if he didn’t do it again.

And so he did, he approached the bear, put his arms around him, and…

“AHH!” Quickly jumping away, he protected his hand from being torn off by the angry teeth that threatened him as soon as he touched the white fur. He watched in horror how the panda growled at him, with one last obscure glance before going back to its cuddling with his bear.

Now this was a strange situation.

He was left sitting at the couch, thinking of what to do.

“How much do you want to stay here?” He asked, but no one answered and the bears continued their staring at the darkening scenery with no intentions of leaving.

He frowned. Sanity and patience were leaving along with the sun.

He heard people in the hallway, probably leaving already, while he was stuck there waiting for his pet to behave properly. Bored and frustrated since he didn’t really dare to try again, especially not with the way the panda looked at him each time he tried to move a hand towards Kumajiro, Matthew let his head hang down in defeat.

These things only happened to him, didn’t they?

“Ju? Sweetie, we need to go…”

The blonde jumped at the voice, stood still once it didn’t repeat, and jumped again once the door swung open with force. He turned to look at Yao, who was hurriedly stepping in and had suddenly stopped on his tracks, staring at the bears now looking at him and the Canadian too, turning to stare at him.

“…What’s going on here?”

Matthew opened his voice to answer, but then again, he had no idea whatsoever of the strange situation he was stuck in. Kumajiro went back to staring, but turned when he saw the panda not following and still staring at his owner.

“Ju…” Yao asked, and the panda lowered her head, ashamed. Matthew was surprised; still, at how innocent it looked when it had tried to rip his hand off only moments before. “We must go.”

The answer was probably the most pathetic, saddest and heart-wrenching whine Matthew had ever heard. He wanted to squeeze the panda to death after it, no matter of the danger, even more once it let out another and longer one, so sad and broken and…!

“Ahh, no! That won’t work! We’re leaving!”

More whining, and the blonde stepped back once Yao stormed towards the pair and yanked the panda on his arms, firmly holding her while picking up her bed to carry it with them. All the time, the panda bear kept whining, more like crying now, and the Canadian quickly hugged Kumajiro as soon as he started whining too. He tried petting him, but his head was fixed staring at the man leaving, the panda bear’s face on his shoulder and looking back at him, eyes now visible because of how bright they were. Or teary. The mere thought made both human and pet shiver.

“Shush, Ju! We’re going home!”

Yao left the room as quick as he entered. Matthew would’ve been offended because of how bluntly ignored he had been, but then again, he was heartbroken along with his bear, both looking at the now closed door. It took a good pair of minutes for both of them to react again, now the fireplace’s light the only thing bringing light to the room.

“I’m sorry.” The blonde muttered, again petting the bear. Kumajiro only looked down, still whining softly.

“I liked her.” Was the only answer in his soft voice, and Matthew felt like running back to get the Chinese man, but he didn’t dare to. He would probably get even more painfully ignored and rejected.

“I know…”

”You’re the worst! Cut it off!”

Two heads peeked from the couch towards the door, one with puffy ears and the other with a curl making its way up. Both heard, in complete silence, whatever was happening outside.

“Oh, no! Don’t give me that face, miss! It won’t work, I told you!”

Kumajiro and Matthew shared a look, and then kept staring at the door.

“Ju, I’m getting angry.”

The whining was now hearable from the room. A small ‘thump’ noise followed, along with a squeak.

“S-Stop rolling on the floor, it’s not cute, it’s humiliating! Someone could see you! N-Nooo, don’t wags your legs like that! Stop it!”

More squeaking. Though, both occupants on the room noticed it wasn’t exactly coming from the panda.

“You, little miss, are in debt forever with me.”

They reacted fast enough to turn away seconds before the door was nearly kicked open, a panda quickly appearing in front of them, Kumajiro jumping from the couch to roll in the floor along with her. It was one of the cutest images Matthew had probably ever seen, and he found himself staring with a dumb smile on his face for a good while. His polar bear was usually quite annoying, yet clingy. It was nice to see him like this.

“I hate her.” A voice behind him said, and Matthew turned to see Yao with his elbow on the back of the couch, chin resting on his hand.

“They can be very manipulative, eh? Hadn’t you arrived, I don’t know if I would’ve dared to… W-Well, pull them apart.” His voice trembled only lightly, and Matthew was already proud of himself. The older nation wasn’t someone close to him, much less easy to talk to. He was happy and almost hysterical when Yao smiled, giving a nod.

“I was in a hurry, and well… Was. Then again, it was so she could rest and sleep in her real bed tonight.” The Asian man moved to sit on the couch, next to the blonde, who couldn’t help but look at him excitedly while he talked. “Doing something bad for her own good.”

“Sometimes it works.” He commented. Yao looked at him, and nodded.

“You’re a smart one.”

Now he was being complimented by the People’s Republic of China. A country he had never talked to, never seen, barely knew. And he had started the conversation itself! He was so proud he was near giggling. But that would’ve looked silly. He knew he had to mind his manners, and his words, of course. Luckily, he had experience hanging with a certain someone else.

“Let them do what they want. Just a bit, but not for long, though. They can’t think they’re free to do what they want.”

“They aren’t cubs, yet they keep learning, yes!” Yao answered, happily but staring at the bears still playing around. Matthew didn’t blame him, though, his eyes found their way into the adorable scene too. “I see why Ju liked him. You educated him well.”

“Judging by the flowers and the curtain pieces thrown on the floor, I think yes. In a way.”

The laughter was nervous, now. Yao stood up and picked up said gifts that Kumajiro had ‘borrowed’, shaking his head but mumbling something about not being bad, about being able to sew it back in place. Matthew felt surprisingly comfortable in his presence, or maybe it was the happy sounds coming from the bears that made the atmosphere much, much better.

After a good set of minutes, when Yao had clicked the lights on, Matthew checked the time.

“What do we do? They don’t seem to want to separate.”

“I’m very sorry, but I can’t let you take her.” Yao explained, a finger rubbing his lips, deep in thought. “Though I know how dear they can be. I don’t want to take yours, either.”

“Yeah… Maybe we can stay? Do you think Ivan will mind?”

“Ivan? I doubt it.” Yao crouched next to the bears, and in a brave -as Matthew saw it- move, he caressed Kumajiro’s belly while he was with his paws up, back on the floor. Not being very affective to strangers, Kumajiro betrayed his usual behavior and enjoyed the caress, the panda bear, Ju, throwing herself towards them in a somehow jealous way.

Matthew smiled at it, and before he knew it, his legs had made him stand up and approach them. With the encouraging glance Yao gave him, he crouched and caressed the panda bear’s back, and she didn’t snap at him this time, enjoying the petting. Soon it turned into playing, and then Ju’s ample trust surprised Yao when she cuddled and even jumped on Matthew, while Kumajiro’s playfulness surprised Matthew when he returned all of Yao’s tricks on him.

Both had been so interested on the bears, they didn’t notice someone on the hallway had heard their talking and peeked inside once he heard his name being mentioned. With wide purple eyes, and a hand clutching the door handle harder than he should, Ivan watched both men playing with the bears, completely oblivious of his staring.

His 10-minute long staring.

“So what will we do?” Matthew asked, finally, letting Kumajiro settled on his lap, along with Ju, taking their weight with a pained face. “Hn… I told you. They won’t separate.”

“Ah, we’ll see when it stops… Until then, I can’t pull them apart; that would be so cruel.” Yao watched them, with loving eyes, and Matthew felt something strange in him once the same stare landed on his own eyes. It was a known feeling, but very old, it seemed. “Let’s ask Ivan. Maybe we can book reservations somewhere and stay. I’d do it, for them.”

And there it was again. He recognized it as a motherly stare. One Arthur barely showed sometimes in their closest moments, which were long ago, and Francis gave him every now and then, usually mixed with some lust and passion here and there. Though in the Asian’s eyes, he saw nothing but pure motherly love and care. He would’ve said ‘fatherly’, but it wasn’t the same.

He wouldn’t say it out loud, though. The last time Yong Soo mocked the other’s lacking masculinity in a Conference he ended with an exposed fracture.

“You can stay at my house, it is no problem.”

Yao turned in a violent manner, while Matthew jumped and both bears ran from his lap at this. He turned to look at the door, and saw Ivan walking towards them, his usual smile on his face, yet it seemed somehow different. He sensed something, there.

“You were spying on us?” Yao asked, nearly snarling, and Ivan only shook his head softly.

“In my own country? That wouldn’t make sense, now, would it?” Ivan watched the bears, but without the interest the other two men had, turning to look at them soon. “Stay at my place, it’ll be easier.”

“You really don’t mind?” Matthew stood up, and pointed at the bears now cuddling around Yao. “They… Well, they met and now they won’t separate, so…”

“Little bears in love.” Ivan commented. Matthew only nodded, slowly and narrowing his eyes.

“Eh… Yeah. So, there’s no problem?”

“Not at all. You two can stay with me, da.”

“… Are you sure?”

Ivan looked at Matthew, and knew by the blonde’s face that he was quickly getting used to deciphering when he had another intention. He was good at recognizing that one in particular.

“You wouldn’t mind adding a lovely Russian bear to the loving, would you?”

The blonde immediately stepped one step back, but then narrowed his eyes and, having quite more personality now that he was angered, poked the Russian in the chest.

“That is just…! I-It only happened once, Ivan!”

“Ah, but little Matvey…”

“What are you talking about? Bears don’t have threesomes. And you don’t even have a pet bear, do you?” Yao stood in the middle of it, standing up once he saw the Canadian and the Russian discussing, the blonde having been startled so suddenly.

“It was a hockey match, dude! What happens in hockey, stays in hockey!”

“It was two times, Matvey…”

“I told you that one doesn’t count, the showers are off-limits. Anything that happens there never happened!”

“Lies, little lies!”

“I’m not a liar!”

“Yes you are, a liar with a red face~”

“I-I’m not red! And if I am, it’s because I’m angry!”

Both bears stared confused at the scene. Yao had a similar look, which lasted around 5 seconds before he separated them forcefully, yelling.

“Cut it out, it’s ENOUGH! I don’t even get it! He doesn’t have a bear, and now you’re talking about hockey?”

“Didn’t you hear what he said?!”

“Yes, he said he wants a bear of his to join--”

“Oh, fuck me!” Matthew rolled his eyes, arms moving up to grasp at something imaginary out of sheer frustration. “You can’t be that foolish! He wants to join us?”

“Join us in what? Taking care of the bears?”

“No! Join is as in, SEXUALLY! Like you’re the panda bear, I’m the polar bear, and he’s the Russian bear, Yao! You can’t have such a thick skull!”

“Wait… With us?!”

“YES, that’s what I said, a friggin’ threesome with us represented in goddamned BEARS!”

“See you next meeting.”

Matthew had his arms still in the air when he looked at Ivan and saw that he wasn’t really paying attention to them. Yao turned, with a shocked expression too, and saw Kiku in the doorway, quickly taking notes.

“Good night to all.” He said, giving a nod and walking away, still writing.

Awkward silence fell on them and Matthew slowly regained his composure, regretting more with each second as Yao’s face instead got angrier.

“Thank you. Now Yong Soo won’t leave me alone asking what on Earth is a doujinshi of us three doing in the internet.”
